An inorganic synthetic elastomer, Silicone rubber is made of semi-inorganic polymer. This versatile material is derived from inorganic silica (sand). Its first commercial use was seen during World War II to meet the requirements of the military applications that required extreme temperature resistance. Since then many advances have been made to enhance elongation, tensile strength and tear resistance. Today apart from its wider temperature resistant attributes, silicone rubber now possesses physical properties that have a clear edge over a number of other synthetic polymers.
